Desperados is about a group of three female friends who rush to Mexico after Wesley (Nasim Pedrad) sends a drunk message to her boyfriend that she regrets. Desperados had it's funny moments and a great cast with chemistry but was sadly let down by it's forgettable mediocrity, and lack of thought to it's creative choices, let's talk about this more in detail.
First of all the main character was very likeable, the chemistry between the different characters was great, and all three main characters were equally as likeable and a equal amount of screen time. The main character Wesley played by Nasim Pedrad was extremely likeable and a great choice for the main character. She had great charm and humour to her that made her very enjoyable to watch, as well as her being very relatable with her views on getting through life and relationships. The chemistry between all three friends played by Anna Camp and Sarah Burns was fantastic, there friendship was instantly relatable, funny and believable and developed well throughout the movie instead of staying the same which was nice, they were all equally as likeable as well which is very rare, with distinct fun personalities that shone throughout, with an equal amount of screen time to let all three shine equally which was nice to see.
Also, the film was funny, had good themes and topics raised on relationships and a fun set up for the main plot point. The film did have many laugh out loud moments that kept you interested, some were slightly controversial but that for me just made it even more funny with awkward situations and relatable humour. Some of the films themes that they expressed were good and fairly well thought out, themes of finding yourself and staying loyal to your friends especially stood out to me, but even themes of struggling to date after a death of a partner were handled sensitively and well. The set up for the main plot point was also great, despite it not paying off later on which we will get onto later, the actual set up of the main plot point of the drunk text was relatable, funny and understandable from the characters point of view.
My next two positives would be the fun plot and the good subplots for Anna Camp and Sarah Burns characters. The plot itself if you didn't think about it to much was a lot of fun and a nice easy to watch. There was nothing to overcomplicated and the laughs were there, so for an average viewer this might have been a lot better then what I have scored it, the film actually had good subplots for the other characters in the friendship group which I was really glad, having one of them struggle to find someone after a break up because of cheating, and the other struggling to come to terms with possibly not being able to conceive a child was handled really well, and made me care about all three characters equally as much as each other.
However now for my few negatives that really bought the film down to it's mediocrity. It was generic, the main relationship was too rushed to be the main plot point and there was some questionable decisions by the main character that put parts of the plot into question. The plot was extremely generic and lacked any real creativity, and sadly just didn't really add anything new to the comedy genre, it had such predictable plot points and situations that you have seen on multiple occasions that it just made the film feel lazily written. I also thought that the main relationship for Nasim Pedrads character was way to rushed to be considered the main plot point. The beginning was rushed with her relationship with him, that you instantly felt no connection to them whatsoever, due to them being complete opposites, and the whole opposites attract of trying to be someone you aren't just didn't work for me. So to have the main character so desperate to be with a man she barely knew was just poor writing and lacked creativity or thought into the main plot of the movie. I also found some of the decision made by the main character a bit questionable and it put parts of the movie into question, like I previously said her being so desperate to be with a man she knows wasn't right for he was ridiculous, even to the point of her forgetting about her friends, which for me was a bad decision as it made her character look selfish so sadly this was also poorly done.
My final few positives would be the interesting development with the relationships of some of the characters, the good amount of character development and a predictable but satisfying ending. Th development between Nasim Pedrad's character and Lamorne Morris was probably my favourite part of the movie. Watch their relationship slowly develop and blossom throughout the movie was really nice to see, they didn't even realise they were falling in love with each other but it they both accepted each other for who they were so both their characters developed well. I also found the ending of both of these characters despite being very predictable was very satisfying and ended the film on a positive note.
Overall Desperados has just enough charm, likeable characters, humour, and a fantastic lead performance from Nasim Pedrad. But sadly, its lack of creativity and lazy writing make it a mediocre and forgettable comedy that doesn't add anything new to the genre.
